| Abstract | The increase of agricultural areas, specially with crops such as soybeans, have shown a direct relationship with the processes of conversion of land use and cover, mainly in areas of natural vegetation. As example, cerrado had about 40% of its area reduced as the establishment of new areas for agriculture and pasture. This way, it becomes increasingly important an operational and systematic monitoring of these areas to ensure the conservation of terrestrial ecosystems and consequently the maintenance of biogeochemical cycles and climate systems. Remote sensing data have been frequently used for monitoring the contiguous areas of natural vegetation, by identifying the process of converting these areas into agriculture, to estimate rates of deforestation and identify the predominant crops in the dynamics of land use and cover. This study was therefore to analyze the dynamic use and land cover, crop years 1990/1991, 1997/1998 and 2009/2010, in areas of cerrado. For this, we used multitemporal remote sensing images, digital processing techniques and interpretation of images as digital classification, editing raster and ancillary data, available for free. The remote sensing data were sensitive to follow the dynamics of the use and land cover, identifying the increased acreage in regions of the cerrado in the State of Maranhão, which makes it possible to identify the processes responsible for fragmentation of the landscape. |
